sorry, we do not have graffe hair in stock

Natural Fibres come from animals or plants.
Animal fibres
or protein fibres (including human hair) felt easily. Each hair has microscopic scales (you sometimes see them on shampoo advertisements saying that it will smooth them) that hook into each other, so the more scales the easier the fibre will felt. Courser wool has larger scales that reflect more light and has more sheen or luster. When all the scales are used up, the process ends and no new wool can be persuaded to attach itself. SuperWash describies the process of smoothing or glueing down the scales so the fibre will not felt.

All fibres other than sheep wool are called specialty fibres. The thickness/courseness of the fibre is measured in micron and ranges for wool from 16 to over 40 microns. Fibre is also defined by length (staple). luster and softness. The term "baby" refers to fibres under 21 micron and is the wool from the first shearing (yearling). The two main catagories of wool are carpet (course) and apparel. The more crimp (waves) the fibre has, the more elastic it is. Medullation refers to how hollow a fibre is. Hollow fibres are possum, alpaca, llama, deer, reindeer, angora rabbit... and polar bear.

We offer a selection of animal fibres for your creative projects.
Sheep breeds like Gotland (locks) are suitable for beards and hair. The coarser goat's hair and Heidschnucke (sheep) with grey streaks are suitable too.....
Experiment with reindeer hair, it is very short and crumbly.

Texel and Scotland fibre are also available farther down as "undyed wool roving".
Some of our locks are not washed so that the curls stay nice. Greasy wool is heavy.

Polwarth is a pretty normal soft wool, very similar to Merino, but uncombed it has a very tight crimp and looks wonderful for beards on small gnomes or other hairy creatures. The staple length is about 10cm but only about two thirds are white (clean).

Mohair roving (70% Mohair, 30% wool) is dyed in many different hair colours and can be used to embellish animals. Cat tummies look softer.  As mohair has a soft shine it creates an animal like look combined with wool. Mohair  attaches best to other fibres with our "cream" felting needle
